Workshop 1:
Characterization: Creating Believable Folks
The key to a good story is a realistic
character with whom you relate. Learn how to sketch your characters with and
without words.
Workshop 2:
Plot: Penning Page Turners
Conflict is essential if you want your reader
to keep turning the pages. Find out how conflict works within classic plot
structure and also how Hollywood plot formulas can generate story conflict.
Workshop 3:
Setting: Showing, Not Telling
Students often want to skip this aspect of
narrative writing, but learning how to show, not tell can weave in conflict
through well-done description. Discover the simple trick to establish setting
that will add suspense to your writing.
Workshop 4:
Storyboarding: Finding Great Ideas
Want to write a story or a book but you’re
short on ideas? Storyboarding is the method that Disney uses to brainstorm new
film storylines. After one group session you’ll feel empowered to write any kind
of assignment.

Janet Holm
McHenry is a national speaker and the author of 19 books, as well as
hundreds of articles in magazines and newspapers, including Today’s
Christian Woman, Decision, and Guideposts. Because of her
best-selling book PrayerWalk, she has been featured in national
magazines such as Health, First, and Family Circle. Janet
holds a degree in journalism from UC Berkeley and formerly worked as a
newspaper reporter and editor. She and her husband Craig live in Loyalton,
where they have raised four children and where she is a high school English
teacher. Teenagers, she says, are some of her favorite people, noting,
“Watching the lightbulbs turn on in their eyes is why I love teaching.”
