Reno Speech & Debate Workshop

Kim Anderson with Teen Intern Petra Anderson

Kim Anderson , Author and teacher
In the course of her career as a professional mother, Kim Anderson has home-schooled her three children, trained lobbyists for Concerned Women for America, founded Credo Academy (a homeschool college prep cooperative), coached national speech and debate champions, and produced summer-stock Shakespeare and award-winning independent film with her children.  Kim has written Countdown to College: a Homeschoolers’ Guide to Winning Scholarships, which helped her first-launched child win over half a million dollars in scholarships. The book prompted a workshop series: “Is There Life After High School?” which walks homeschooling families through the unfamiliar territory of college prep and moving into the post-graduate phase of life.  Her work on homeschool college prep has featured her family in a Focus on the Family television short and has made her a popular radio talk-show guest.  Kim is the author of Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Guidebook for Debating the Value Topic, and is the retiring Regional Coordinator for a 12-state area in the National Christian Forensics & Communication Association.

18 year old Petra Anderson is a 6 year veteran of NCFCA competition and has three times qualified to the NCFCA national tournament. She is especially fond of the limited preparation events offered by the NCFCA. Petra uses her speech and debate skills far beyond competition; as a lead actress in the Shakespeare on the Lawn summer stock theater, which raises money for a statewide crisis pregnancy support agency; as a Legislative Assistant to a Colorado State Senator; and by coaching an online LD debate club (International Debate Society) for isolated rural students and missionary children, and as one of the founders of the annual Colorado Jr. Speech Tournament. Petra also uses her speaking skills to serve as a volunteer for the Municipal Court system in Teen Court, a program that sentences first time juvenile defendants using the principles of restorative justice. Christian Vision for the Arts Fund, Petra’s senior project, is featured in Brett and Alex Harris’ new book, Do Hard Things. The Fund will establish a scholarship for Christian students to pursue excellence and craftsmanship in the arts.
