COME SEE WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU!
This is Jesse Howard with Great
Basin Outdoor School. Here is a
little more information about
Great Basin Outdoor School.
Our camp is located on Lake Tahoe,
in Glenbrook, at Camp Galilee. Here
we spend four days learning about
local geology, forest and wildlife
ecology, astronomy, and management
of our resources. Our students are
taught by naturalists who have
environmental backgrounds and
accustomed to working with children.
Along with this educational program,
we also have a youth leadership and
mentoring program. We give the
opportunity for students 16 and
older to participate in the learning
and teaching by volunteering with
us. Mentors have the responsibility
of basically being counselors to the
younger children. They stay in the
cabins or tent cities with the kids
to make sure they go to sleep and
help them be prepared for the
activities during the days. They
also participate in the naturalist
groups during the classes at camp,
on our day trips to Spooner lake,
and on a research boat at Lake
Tahoe.
This isn't just a baby-sitting job,
though. Mentors get to learn science
in a fun, hands-on way;and they help
the students prepare a skit for our
"Share Ring." Mentors actually get
to teach a short lesson on nocturnal
animals and the senses they share
with humans that help us during the
night. Everything that we expect of
our volunteers will be taught in a
two hour training prior to their
time at camp, and we will have
ongoing support and training at camp
as well.
Another plus for the volunteers,
especially with home school
students, is the opportunity to
receive school or community service
credit for their time with us. Two
of our past mentors who are
returning this fall, Courtney and
Amber, spent approximately six weeks
with us and were the best assets to
the mentor program. At nearly 60
hours a week (including nights) they
received adequate school credit from
their mother Mrs. Bauman.
Please feel free to email me or call
with any questions.
Warm Regards,
Jesse Howard
